The Province of New Brunswick is continuing its Wildlife Rabies Management Program, which helps prevent the spread of rabies in our province.
As part of the program, oral rabies vaccine baits are placed by hand in targeted residential communities during August, with additional aerial baiting taking place in remote areas in October. The baits are designed to be eaten by raccoons, skunks and foxes.
The vaccine bait is an army-green packet with a waxy, fatty coating. Exposure to the bait is not considered harmful to people or pets; however, if you come across one, it is best to leave it where it is so wildlife can find it. If you do handle a bait, wash your hands with warm, soapy water.
Rabies can affect both wildlife and domestic animals and can also be transmitted to people. Residents are encouraged to avoid handling or feeding wildlife, keep pets' rabies vaccinations up to date, and enjoy wildlife from a safe distance.
