With the sale of the Border Arena property, we need to relocate the municipal skate park — and we want your input!

We’ve identified five possible locations:
1. Burton Avenue (behind Scotia Bank/Top Shelf/Courier
This location was suggested by most of the skate park users from the community we have spoken to, it is centrally located and like the other possibilities we are suggesting this is MDSS property. The location is used as overflow parking to King Street businesses at present and for driver’s education classes. There will be some groundwork preparation work needed to develop the park as there are refuge sections of grass in the parking area. There are several neighbouring properties to this potential location that maybe affected by the installation of a new skate park.
2. Abbott Street
The municipality currently has a playground/tot lot located on this parcel of land, this location does have many neighbouring properties and it is further away from the centre of the community and it would be slightly smaller than the previous skate park (image 1). There would be groundwork required as we do see an annual drainage issue on the east side of the parcel next to the evergreen trees but it could be developed into a skate park.
3. Elm Park Subdivision
This Elm Park subdivision parcel of land is in the Milltown area of the community and like Abbot Street there is a municipally owned playground/tot lot located at the park. The footprint is considerably bigger than that of Abbot Street and it is the furthest location of a potential skate park from the downtown area. Just like the other playground/tot lot there will be considerable ground preparation and concrete work needed to develop this into a skate park but there is lots of room to make this the location. The property is also surrounded by neighbouring properties in the Elm Park subdivision.
4. Chocolate Park
There is potential for the skate park to be relocated to the an area within the Chocolate Park, this is also centrally located and accessible for users. A new skate park would not affect too many residents as the park is in the commercial area and depending on the final location in Chocolate Park it would be visible from Milltown Boulevard. We have seen some minor vandalism in the park in recent years, so with more users in the park this could be seen as a positive step towards such issues. There is significant infrastructure under the ground that will affect the final location, plus there is the current engineering project that will determine if there is any contamination on the site as it was previously a gas station.
5. Waterfront Trail/Beacon Apartments
There is a parcel of land near the municipal pumphouse and Beacon apartments at the end of Budd Avenue that potentially could be the location of the skate park. There are several properties around the pumphouse as well as the Beacon Apartments. The Waterfront Trail does provide access to the location and it is close enough to the downtown area for it to be centrally accessible. There will have to be some groundwork preparation and there is existing pumphouse infrastructure under the ground that will determine the final location.
