Dr. Steven C. Backman is a respected community leader with a distinguished career spanning nearly 40 years in aquaculture, veterinary medicine, and international business. He holds a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine and a Diploma in Anatomic Pathology from the University of Guelph, as well as a Diploma in Agricultural Science from the Nova Scotia Agricultural College.
Over the course of his career, Dr. Backman held senior roles in aquatic animal health across Canada and internationally, ultimately concluding his professional work as Product Manager North America for a multinational corporation, with responsibilities spanning Canada, the United States, and Mexico. He also contributed his expertise as a member of several ministerial advisory committees at both the provincial and national levels.
Dr. Backman has a long and dedicated record of community service. He served as a Councillor for the Town of St. Stephen from 1994 to 2001 and has remained actively engaged in local initiatives. He was Chair of the Shark Attack Swim Team for eight years and has contributed to community development as a member of the campaign cabinet for the Garcelon Civic Center. He has also been a member of the Charlotte County Hospital Foundation since 2001 and currently serves as its President.
Known for his commitment to building strong, healthy communities, Dr. Backman continues to play a key role in supporting local organizations and initiatives. In recognition of his professional contributions, he has received the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association’s Award for Food Animal Veterinarians.
